Family Charter of the Hahn-Weißenburg Family Association
Preamble:
The Foundational Accor
We, the members of the Hahn-Weißenburg family, united by shared history, heritage, and mutual respect, hereby establish this Charter to honor our past, steward our present, and ensure our legacy for the future. As the successors in name, arms, and title to the heritage of the Barons of Knabenau (Freiherren von Knabenau), which devolved upon our line through maternal descent, this document serves to affirm and protect our unified familial identity and its historical continuity.
Article 1:
Purpose & Identity
Section 1.1 – The Family Association:
The undersigned form the Hahn-Weißenburg Family Association, a private, voluntary body dedicated to:
  1. Preserving and researching the family's history, archives, and heritage.
  2. Organizing reunions and fostering fellowship among members.
  3. Managing any common property, trusts, or funds held for the family's benefit.
  4. Representing the family's shared historical interests in a dignified manner.

Section 1.2 – Leadership Offices:
The Association shall have two distinct, recognized offices:
  1. The Family Head: Acts as the chief executive, chair of the Family Council, and primary administrator.
  2. The Head of Title: Acts as the ceremonial guardian and recognized representative of any historical noble title associated with our lineage.
Article 2:
The Family Head
Section 2.1 – Role and Distinction:
The Family Head is the chief executive and administrative leader of the Association. This role focuses on the present and future governance of the family as a community.

Section 2.2 – Selection Criteria:
The Family Head should be a person of good standing within the family, with demonstrated organizational ability, sound judgment, and a commitment to family unity.

Section 2.3 – Method of Succession:
Succession to the office of Family Head shall follow the principle of Seniority by Birthright with Council Confirmation.
  1. The position shall normally pass to the most senior eligible descendant of the previous Head, by primogeniture, regardless of gender.
  2. An eligible candidate is a person of majority age, willing and able to serve.
  3. The proposed successor must be confirmed by a simple majority vote of the Family Council. If rejected, the Council will nominate and elect an alternative candidate.
Article 3:
The Head of Title – Guardian of the Unified Heritage
Section 3.1 – Role and Significance:
The Head of Title is the ceremonial and historical representative of the family's complete hereditary legacy. This singular office embodies the unified identity of the Hahn-Weißenburg family as the successors to the name, arms, and title of the Barons of Knabenau. The heritage is one and indivisible.

Section 3.2 – Succession Mechanism for the Head of Title:
Succession to this office, which safeguards the family's unified legacy, shall follow the principle of Agnatic Primogeniture with Female Cognate Fallback, applied to the Hahn-Weißenburg line as the vessel of the combined inheritance.
Primary Rule (Agnatic Primogeniture): The office passes to the nearest male-line descendant of the previous Head of Title within the Hahn-Weißenburg family, from son to son, according to seniority of line.
Fallback Rule (Female Cognate Descent): If all legitimate male lines of the Hahn-Weißenburg family are extinct, the office shall pass to the son of the nearest female-line descendant of the Hahn-Weißenburg family. The right of representation applies through that female line.
This mechanism honors the historical reality: Just as the Knabenau legacy passed through a female cognate to our family, the office may again do so if the direct male line fails, ensuring the perpetual continuity of the unified heritage within the bloodline.

Section 3.3 – Confirmation Process:
Upon a vacancy, the Family Council shall form a Title Committee.
The Committee will research and verify the correct successor based on the rules above and the verifiable genealogy of the Hahn-Weißenburg family.
The Committee shall propose this successor to the full Family Council.
The successor, as the new guardian of the unified legacy, must be confirmed by a two-thirds majority vote of the Family Council.

Section 3.4 – Registry & Recognition:
The confirmed Head of Title is recorded in the official Family Register as the "Head of Title and Guardian of the Heritage." The Association recognizes this individual as the legitimate representative of the family's complete historical identity.
Article 4:
Membership & Family Standing
Section 4.1 – Member in Good Standing:
Any direct descendant of Johann August von Hahn, the family's progenitor, their spouse, and adopted children (where legally finalized), is a member in good standing.

Section 4.2 – Family Council Candidacy:
To serve as a voting member of the Family Council, a member must be an adult direct descendant, or a spouse who has been a member for over ten years.

Section 4.3 – Marriage & Inclusion:
Marriage to a non-member is celebrated. Spouses are welcomed as full members.
Article 5:
The Family Council
Section 5.1 – Function:
The Family Council is the primary governing and decision-making body of the Association.

Section 5.2 – Composition:
The Council is composed of:
  1. One elected representative from each major adult branch of the family.
  2. The Family Head, who serves as Chair.
  3. The Head of Title (if a different person from the Family Head).

Section 5.3 – Powers & Responsibilities:
The Council holds the authority to:
  1. Approve the annual budget and manage common funds.
  2. Organize major reunions and heritage projects.
  3. Confirm the succession of both the Family Head and the Head of Title.
  4. Resolve internal disputes.
  5. Amend this Charter with a two-thirds majority vote.
Article 6:
Stewardship & Common Interests
Section 6.1 – Heritage Assets:
The Family Council is responsible for the stewardship of all common family assets, which include the historical records, symbols, and narratives of the unified Hahn-Weißenburg and Knabenau legacy.
The Council may appoint a Family Historian/Archivist to manage the part of the assets which include family archive and research.

Section 6.2 – Representation:
  1. The Family Head is the primary contact for all Association business.
  2. The Head of Title is the primary contact for matters relating to the family's complete hereditary heritage and its historical representation.
Article 7:
Interim Leadership & Amendments
Section 7.1 – Interim Head:
If the Family Head is temporarily unable to serve, the Family Council shall appoint an Interim Head from among its members.

Section 7.2 – Retirement:
The Family Head or Head of Title may retire by providing written notice to the Council, triggering the relevant succession process.
